Animal Style Fries (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ For the Special Sauce

01 - 1/2 cup mayonnaise, creamy and rich
02 - 2 tablespoons ketchup
03 - 1/2 tablespoon rice vinegar or white vinegar, for tanginess
04 - 2 tablespoons sweet relish
05 - 1 tablespoon sugar, to balance the flavors
06 - 1/2 tablespoon chili flakes (optional, for those who enjoy a kick)

→ For the Fries Base

07 - 1/2 bag frozen french fries, your favorite brand
08 - Cheddar cheese or American cheese slices, for that perfect melt

→ For the Caramelized Onions

09 - 2 onions, finely diced
10 - 2 tablespoons butter
11 - 1 tablespoon neutral oil (like vegetable or canola)
12 - 1/2 teaspoon salt

# Instructions:

01 - Begin by melting butter in a pan over medium-low heat, then add your neutral oil. Toss in the diced onions and salt, stirring to coat. Now comes the patience - stir every few minutes as the onions slowly transform into golden, sweet perfection. This magical process takes at least 30 minutes, sometimes longer. If they start to brown too quickly, simply lower the heat.
02 - While the onions work their magic, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, vinegar, sweet relish, sugar, and chili flakes (if using) in a bowl. Set aside to let the flavors meld together.
03 - Cook your frozen fries according to the package instructions until they're perfectly golden and crispy.
04 - Once your fries are hot and crispy, top them with either grated cheddar or sliced American cheese. Place under the broiler for 3-5 minutes, watching carefully until the cheese becomes melty and starts to bubble.
05 - Pull your cheesy fries from the oven and immediately top with the caramelized onions. Drizzle the special sauce generously over everything. Serve right away while everything is hot and gooey!

# Notes:

01 - The key to perfect caramelized onions is patience - don't rush this step
02 - While authentic In-N-Out uses American cheese, cheddar offers a sharper, more complex flavor
03 - The traditional sauce doesn't include chili flakes, but they add a wonderful heat if you enjoy spice
